KILLING EVENTS AND SOCIALS

* Assassins is the friendly game in which consenting people `kill' each other with a variety of safe, non-alarming and amusing toy weaponry.

* It is a way of meeting new people and making friends that is of particular value to the New (Freshers!), the Shy and the Different.

* See our WHAT IS ASSASSINS ? if you want to know more.

* At this point in time, present and future events and socials to be advertised on this website are open-declaredly Safer Spaces, meaning that during and over these specifically zero personal abuse is be tolerated asthe most primary and defining character. In the present clime, anybody in breach of this will be politely but clearly warned once if they are abusive, and, in the event of not heeding that warning, will be asked to leave. That, and serious irresponsibility, are the only grounds acceptable to us for anyone being asked to leave. We welcome all people who wish for a place where they know they won't be shouted at, insulted or excluded, provided that each of these people themselves does not do such things here, or puts the safety of the activity at risk. If anybody were asked to leave on such grounds and were to refuse to do so or elsewise go and undermine the provision of safer spaces, well, in doing so they'd be specifically damaging useful alternative welfare societies, and this will likely generate serious and rightful complaints. The Gold Assassins group of societies (currently packaged into ALSO and FRIEAS) have always done their best to provide safer spaces; in better times we usually did so less openly than we currently feel to be necessary. In particular, ALSO has been specifically designed, run, maintained and funded as a refuge from bullying. We now also openly declare that the alternative inter-uni portion of FRIEAS - Afternoon of Assassins Fun - to be a Safer Space for inter-uni assassins-type activities *by invitation only*.

What are KILLING EVENTS?.

Typically 1-hour to afternoon-long open participation events involving friendly, safe and fun "killing", run by some combination or other of Cambridge's assassins societies (follow links under the below Crests!) or individuals. There's around 6 to 8 Killing Events per term. That's the total amount, not the amount with "Safer Space" designation run by us Gold people. Killing Events occasionally also involve assassins societies from other unis (maybe once or twice per year).

What are ASSASSINS SOCIALS?

These do not (or only partially) involving any "killing". Some past such have been Assassins Formal Hall, Guild Start and End of Game Parties, Pubmeets including before or after Killing Events or the IncoBash - mass-raid unto current Guild Players freshly declared to be Incompetent, film outings, Piracy on the Cam is part-social... There's around 5 assassins-related socials per term.

CAMBRIDGE'S VARIOUS ASSASSINS SOCIETIES

* This page is maintained by GOLD Assassins, i.e. those who We promise to always be friendly during and over assassins business: No Killing Without Friendliness! We are not the same as the GUILD, though the overlap is very large! Anyway, what matters is that we Golds provide multiple opportunities for people to be part of the organizing of assassins: Golds have as many posts as people wish to contribute, provided you promise to be, and abide by being, friendly and responsible (all Cambridge assassins societies require "responsible"). And we Golds provide "Safer Space" activities.

The group of Gold Assassins societies currently consists of the All Souls Assassins Service (alias ALSO) and the Friendly Assassins (FRIEAS). Most of what remains of our backing body, last seen under the name of Core Aurors, has moved to FRIEAS. Ditto Afternoon of Assassins Fun.

SOME OF THE CONTACTS FOR ASSASSINS EVENTS AND SOCIALS ARE THEN

To be part of organizing a safer space activity such as here, the minimal requirements are

1) never doing unsafe, unalarming or unfriendly things during or over assassins business and exclude nobody from participation in such bar those banned for repeatedly violating 1) and/or 2), and

2) always being friendly during and over assassins business ,

1) is obligatory in anysort of assassins activity in Cambridge, and asking people to promise 2) has long been going on whilst we were a safer space of the heavily-implied form rather than of the openly-declared form. Thus many of the people who've done assassins activities with us before already have the minimal requirements.

RECENT ASSASSINS EVENTS AND SOCIALS

Gives you a fair idea what we get up to!

Friendly Assassins Game Oct 6 to 14! see here for RULES is a laid-back resurrect the next day if you are killed game based on meeting people and making friends rather than on any notion of competing. The intent of this was as a nice gentle introduction to a bit of assassination, ideal for first-timers and people who play just a bit of assassins here and there.

* CTF has gone right through to its third meet of the term (10:30 am sunday 30th Queens Backs).

* The Guild ran a Piracy on The Cam in mid-June (Charlie).

* Wednesday 15 June saw a Picnic and Waterfight run by ALSO and the Core Aurors (Tom and "assassins=welfare".)

* ALSO's subsidiary The CakeFairy was active ^^ Sign up to friendlily receive, and give, exam-stress-relief biscuits.

* ALSO and Afternoon of Assassins Fun co-organized an Afternoon of Assassins Fun with the UEA guild's people over in Norwich. This involve gentle fighting between mixed teams, all-on-all Sneaking Tournament. And a bit of a social (at which attaching Magnetic Animals to other assassins without being caught occurred :). Thanks to Tom, Hannah, "assassins=welfare", Sam and Lucia for helping this come about :)

* Silly Societies Killer was run by ALSO on March 16.

* Varsity happened in Cambridge in early March. UEA, Durham, Leeds and Sheffield were present. Cos we're inclusive we'll add Lincoln and Oxford to that (1 each!). This didn't really go according to plan. To which the answer appears to be multiple 2-society meets... And, yes, the two so far (Leeds + Durham and ALSO + UEA) have worked very nicely :)

* ALSO's CakeFairies provided relief to numerous upset people in the late Feb through to early March timeband. Three have been awarded 1/3-Golds for that in the form of FairyWands. Happify!

* ALSO/Core Aurors ran Visiting Admiral's Event Extravaganza ocurred on Sunday 20 Feb !!! Dossier of Where to Ambush Her Admiralness Here!. Rules for the Event Here!. Withthanks to Bright Star and "assassins=welfare".

* Tuesday 25 Jan had a Formal Hall in Pembroke (run by Matt: Guild Umpire and Bright Star: ALSO).

* Sun 23 Jan saw Guerrillas in the Grange Road area by ALSO and Core Aurors.

* Sat 22 Jan saw Charlie and Matt run Urban CTF.

* Sun 16 Jan saw Fighting and Battle! in the Queens Backs Area by CTF and Core Aurors (run by Matt, Charlie, "assassins=welfare" and Anya).

* Sat 15 Jan saw ALSO run Sneaking from 2 pm in the street setting.

EMAIL LISTS ADVERTISING KILLING EVENTS AND ASSASSINS SOCIALS

NB Killing Events/Assassins Socials will be advertised on this or that of a *variety* of email lists (so that being on one such list is not a guarantee you'll be getting emails about all the Socials and Events by assassins. There are presently *two* Guild lists: main games list and Guild socials list, and a third social/events list called also-allsouls that is shared by ALSO/Core Aurors called also-allsouls. Use the above contact names (or the srcf email list subscription pages) to get onto whichever of these lists interest you and you find you aren't on already.

We offer the following useful basic resources to people participating in *either* Guild or Gold-run activities.

* A BASIC IDEA OF WHAT ASSASSINS GAMES AND EVENTS INVOLVE , with a few tactical tips (optional) and outline of the serious rules (to always be adhered to).

* A Leaflet for Accomplices to ensure that your involving Accomplices (non-players willing to lend a hand in various minor and allowed ways) is both productive and stays well within the important rules.

* And a How Assassins Settle Disagreed Events Leaflet .

UNDERLYING PHILOSOPHY

* One commonly held view is that whoever is sufficiently bothered to run assassin related events, and is sufficiently sensible and real-life-pleasant in thus doing, is welcome to just go ahead and do so. [And with proper rights and access to publicity.]

* Assassins is then like the University with the above societies then being like a variety of Colleges. Unlike Colleges, however, one is welcome to belong to, and do things with, as many of them as one pleases! And some people run Events and Socials independently of any of these assassins societies

Disclaimer: We are not responsible for any further unfriendlinesses or irresponsibilities to be found in games, events and socials run by people other than us. If any such you experience cause you to want to quit, we plead that you consider quitting *the particular assassins society in question* rather than all of the assassins societies. For us Golds are largely there as a service for the new, the shy and the different, and our own assassins activities are friendly, inclusive and personally dignifying, and are now open-declaredly safer spaces (in a similar manner that a subset of LGBT open-declaredly is). Activities run by or recommended by Gold Assassins have a strong tradition of being run as (often open-undeclared but heavily implied) safer spaces, and have been run as such right back to the mid 1990's, when safer spaces were an utter rarity. We might be among the earliest pioneers of such, and we've kept records of what we've learnt in the process.
